When a girl or boy is forced to marry at a very young age, there’s no assurance that would make that marriage a successful one. There are many cases that the marriage ends up broken. Young minds should be able to understand first what is marriage before having them tied up to someone you’re aren’t even sure would take good care of them.
Just like with the american woman who was forced to marry a man she called her “rapist” at the age of 11. She shared this to New York Times how she was forced to marry her rapist.
The woman is named Sherry Johnson from Florida. She told the interviewer Nicholas Kristof that she was raped by both a minister and a parishioner at her conservative Pentecostal church. She got pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl at 10 years old.
Ms. Johnson’s family and church officials organised her marriage with the 20-year-old perpetrator in order to avoid a criminal case. That’s according to the investigation of child welfare authorities.
“It was forced on me. My mom asked me if I wanted to get married, and I said, ‘I don’t know, what is marriage, how do I act like a wife?’ She said, ‘Well, I guess you’re just going to get married.”
Now as an adult, Ms. Johnson shared that her life with rapist husband was terrible. She missed out on school, became pregnant many more times and gave birth to nine children.
“You can’t get a job, you can’t get a car, you can’t get a license, you can’t sign a lease,” So why allow someone to marry when they’re still so young?” -she said.
According to MSN, she is now taking part in a campaign to end the practice of child marriage, which continues to take place in several US states.
