Skylar Neese, a 16-year-old girl from from West Virgina was reported missing on July 6, 2012. 6 months after, one of her two closest friends revealed the truth behind her lost.
Dave and Mary are Skylar’s parents. They described their daughter as a bubbly working student who juggles getting good grades in school while working part-time at a fast food chain. Skylar balances all this and still manages to have a good time with her two best friends.
Skylar met her first best friend Shelia when she was just 8. The Neese family treated Shelia like their own daughter. In 2010 Shelia met Rachel Shoaf and introduced her to Skylar. The three immediately clicked and became inseparable as BFFs.
On July 5, Skylar reportedly went to her part-time job and never came back home since then.
In its report, Ur Daily Journal wrote that Skylar’s parents found out that the window screen on her room was removed and that there is a bench near it which Skylar use to escape at night.
It was then that they found out that Skylar did not go to work that day and they immediately called 911 to ask for help to find their daughter. West Virginia police department launched a search and investigation for the lost teenage girl.
Meanwhile, Shelia called Skylar’s parents to narrate what happened to their group the previous night. Shelia said that the three of them snuck out on the evening of July 4 so they can talk about their friendship, they drove around Star City and revealed that they got high from drugs before driving Skylar home. But she said they only dropped their friend in the corner so as not to wake her parents up.
Because of this statement, the police concluded that Skylar must have been high from illegal drugs and died on her way home, and when people saw her dead body they might have panicked and disposed her body somewhere.
However, one of the case investigators named Jessica Colebank said she found Shelia’s way of testifying lacks empathy which is very disturbing while Rachel seems scared to death. Aside from that, both girls story were exactly the same to which Jessica suspected: “No one’s story is exactly the same unless it’s rehearsed.”
Evidence were later discovered that Shelia Rachel and Shelia were lying. Authorities discovered their phone records and surveillance videos. The girls were pressured by everyone to confess the truth.
On January 3, 2013, 6 months after Skylar’s death, Rachel had a nervous breakdown which led her to confess that she and Shelia connived and stabbed Skylar to death and Rachel led the police to the crime scene. Skylar was then found with a total of 50 stabs all over her body.
When asked why they decided to kill Skylar, Rachel has a very simple explanation: “We just didn’t like her.”
She then pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment while Shelia faced a third-degree murder punished with 15 years to life in prison.
Because of Skylar’s death, the West Virginia Amber Alert strengthened their force to immediately locate missing children and teens.
