Farmer’s son makes it to Harvard University after passing scholarship exam

Residents of the town of Janiuay, Iloilo are now very proud to share the news that a son of a farmer from the said town was able to get a once in a lifetime chance of being able to study at the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts because he was able to land on a scholarship grant.

The lucky student is Glemir Mamon Argaña, 23, and a native of Barangay Monte-Magapa. Glemir is the son of vendors at Iloilo Terminal Market named Rogelio and Josephine Argaña.

Bombo Radyo Ilo-ilo reported that Glemir was able to pass a scholarship offered by Harvard and he will take the Bachelor of Science in Law course. Glemir was offered free tuition, a dormitory allowance, free uniform and even free travel from the Philippines to Harvard.

Rogelio said in an interview that he and his wife had no reaction when Glemir said the happy news because they have no idea about Harvard University. Rogelio only finished High School while Josephine was not able to go to school.

When they knew what Harvard is and how prestigious it is, they were very happy and proud of their son. Rogelio even confessed that they they will not be able to send Glemir to college because of their very poor life but, Glemir was very motivated to fulfill his dreams that he tried his best in applying for Harvard.

Glemir will start studying at Harvard on June 21, 2018.

Netizens expressed how proud they are of Glemir’s achievement and re-iterated the old but never once faded quote which says, “Poverty is not a hindrance to success.”
