A lady just redefined the common beauty standards in every beauty pageants. She just showed a different kind of beauty with a great courage to the world. She is a half-Filipina, half-Rungus lass from Sabah who earned praises because of her courage to join the pageant.
She is Evita Patcey Edgar Delmundo, a 20-year-old from Kota Kinabalu, who recently auditioned for the Miss Universe Malaysia 2018. It was one of her biggest dreams to become a beauty queen. But what is different with her, she’s not the woman whom we normally see in pageants because she has a lot of moles in different sizes, in her whole body and face.
According to her, although she’s already used to get unusual stares from the people around her, the decision to audition was still not easy. As she recalled, “The girls at the registration counter were surprised when they saw me. They told me I was brave to try out for an audition and wished me luck.”
She shared how she got bullied as a girl at a primary school where she was called ‘monster’ or ‘chipsmore’. But the bullying came less and less and she just learned to accept and love herself and became more open to others when she attended a church camp at the age of 16.
As she narrated:
“I use to cry and blame fate for the way I was born but when I entered high school it all turned for the better. People were more accepting of who I am, I had friends and I became more confident in myself.”
Her condition is actually a “Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus’’, a rare condition caused by the uneven distribution of melanin across the skin. But Evita said her condition is not a disease. “They are just normal moles. I have met with skin specialists and they told me it is not a skin disease,” she said.
She is looking forward to the main competition and her inspiration is Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach. “I’m just keeping my fingers crossed. If I don’t get through, there’s always another platform,” the lady said, beaming with confidence and optimism.
Evita is just suffering from ‘Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus’, a rare condition caused by the uneven distribution of melanin across the skin but it’s not a disease at all.
Many were then inspired by the courage she have shown and that she is still beautiful inside and out.
