Indonesian blows boats from Philippines over “illegal fishing”

Indonesian authorities celebrated April Fool’s Day with a bang after blowing up 81 foreign fishing boats who got caught illegally fishing on their borders. Ships were blown up at sea in 12 locations around the archipelago on Saturday in Jakarta.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti, witnessed it all transpired and proclaimed that it is a victory for Indonesia’s war against illegal fishing. Enforcement efforts have been ramped up in recent years, including the enhancement of its maritime surveillance capabilities.

According to sources, vessels from Vietnam (142), Philippines (76), Malaysia (49) and also ones from China were caught by a special maritime task force known as Satgas 115.

Indonesia has now sunk 317 foreign fishing vessels since 2014, when it began taking a tougher stance against illegal fishing in its waters under the leadership of President Joko Widodo.
